Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal on Monday held a protest march in the capital against Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, condemning remarks described as derogatory towards women. Some protesters displayed broomsticks as a symbol of protest.
The march began in front of the BNP’s central office at Naya Paltan in the afternoon, proceeded through Kakrail and Nightingale intersections, and ended at the same venue.
The program was led by BNP Standing Committee member Selima Rahman, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Mahila Dal President Afroza Abbas, Senior Vice President Helen Zerin Khan and General Secretary Shirin Sultana, along with metropolitan unit leaders.
During the procession, participants chanted slogans demanding an apology from the Jamaat ameer and protesting remarks they said demeaned women.
The demonstration follows recent controversy surrounding statements attributed to Dr Shafiqur Rahman, which have drawn criticism from various quarters.
