BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday accused that a group is carrying out secret attacks aimed at destabilizing the national election, following the shooting of BNP leader Hasan Mollah in Keraniganj.

In a statement, Fakhrul expressed concern and protested the attack, saying, “A group is carrying out secret attacks to undermine the national election.”

The incident took place late Thursday night when miscreants shot Hasan Mollah, 42, general secretary of BNP’s Hazratpur Union unit in Keraniganj Model Upazila, in front of the party office.

Fakhrul said after the fall of the Awami League’s autocratic ruling group during the student and public movements, lurking troublemakers are attempting to create instability in the country again. “They are orchestrating various acts of lawlessness,” he added.

He warned that unless the attackers are identified, brought under the law, and given punishment, they could carry out even larger acts of sabotage.

The BNP secretary general urged people from all walks of life, irrespective of political affiliation, to unite in protecting democracy, citizens’ voting rights, and public safety. He also stressed the need to improve law and order and called on the government to ensure a fear-free environment in the country to guarantee free and fair elections.

Fakhrul demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible for attacking Hasan Mollah and other party activists, and extended his wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured.
