EC yet to find traces of 12,000 N’ganj voters

Update : 06 Oct 2013, 06:57 PM

The Election Commission is yet to find any trace of 12,000 voters of Sonargoan upazila under Narayanganj district on the voter list and National Identity card database.

The commission asked the authorities of NID wing to search the old information on the database.

The task of listing voters with photographs had been done during the army-backed caretaker government in 2008.

Seeking anonymity, an official of National Identity card wing told the Dhaka Tribune there were many mistakes in doing the work in a hurry and the voter list missing was one of the flaws.

“But we are searching the old database. If the list is not found there, the commission would think about re-registration of voters,” he added.

About 11,825 voters of Sonargoan upazila under Narayanganj district registered their names with photographs as voters.

The registered voters also got NID cards, but their names vanished from the 2008 database.

The Election Commission took a number of initiatives to scour the list of voters following an allegation in this regard on April 18, 2011.
