Police on Friday evening rescued Azizar Rahman, an independent MP candidate for the Gaibandha-3 (Sadullapur–Palashbari) constituency, in an unconscious state from Modern Mor in Rangpur city. His mobile phone and cash were reportedly missing at the time.
According to police, locals informed them about an unconscious man lying at Modern Mor around 7pm. A police team rescued him and later identified him as Azizar Rahman.
Confirming the incident, Tajhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ataur Rahman said: “After receiving information from locals, we rescued an unconscious person from Modern Mor. Later, it was confirmed that he is Azizar Rahman, an independent MP candidate from Gaibandha-3.”
Police said that during preliminary questioning, Azizar Rahman stated that after his nomination was initially cancelled, he regained eligibility through an appeal in Dhaka. He then boarded a Pinki Paribahan bus from Gabtoli in Dhaka to Kurigram, intending to return home to Gaibandha.
He alleged that during the journey, some members of a group identifying themselves as belonging to the Ajnan Party in Sirajganj made him unconscious by feeding him eggs.
He further claimed that he was later thrown out of the vehicle at Modern Mor.
After being rescued, he was taken to the police station for further questioning.
Meanwhile, Azizar Rahman’s daughter, Asha Moni Khatun, filed a general diary (GD) with Sadullapur Police Station on Friday afternoon, reporting her father missing.
In the GD, she stated that her father called her on Thursday evening after reaching Dhaka and informed her that he would return home by bus from Gabtoli the following evening.
She further said that around 10:30am on Friday, an unknown person called from her father’s mobile phone and said: “Your father is with us.” When she asked to speak to him, he was unable to respond, and the phone was later switched off. Since then, she had been unable to contact her father.
Police said the matter is being investigated.
