A condolence message from interim government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and a leading figure of the country’s democratic movement, has been handed over to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
The message was delivered at the BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Monday afternoon. Chief Adviser’s Private Secretary Sajeeb M Khairul Islam formally handed over the condolence letter to Tarique Rahman.
In the message, Professor Yunus expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Begum Khaleda Zia. He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to her family, as well as to BNP leaders, activists and supporters.
Earlier, in a separate condolence message, the chief adviser described Khaleda Zia as a “great guardian of the nation,” saying her uncompromising struggle for the restoration of multiparty politics and democracy in Bangladesh would be remembered forever. He also said the nation would respectfully recall her landmark initiatives in advancing women’s education and economic liberalization.
Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30 while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. Following her death, the government declared three days of state mourning. On Monday, the chief adviser sent the formal condolence message to her family on behalf of the state, paying tribute to her memory.
