Ershad offers new polls formula

Update : 02 Oct 2013, 11:10 AM

On Wednesday, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad proposed a new election system explaining that holding fair, neutral and controversy-free election is not possible under the present poll system.

“Today, problems have been created following the caretaker government system. I realise that fair, neutral and controversy-free election is impossible under the current polls system. If a united decision is taken considering my proposal, there’ll be a positive result,” said Ershad.

As per his proposal, the Election Commission will decide which party will get how many seats on the basis of votes cast in favour of the respective party, reported UNB.

The JP Chairman came up with the proposal at a press conference at a city hotel.

Ershad said there will be 300 seats for the Jatiya Parishad, and 50% of that will be under general quota, 30% for women, 10% for minorities and 10% for professionals.

Under the general quota, anybody can offer his candidature while teachers, lawyers, intellectuals, journalists, industrialists and business and labour leaders will be able to contest under the professional quota.

Ershad proposed the Election Commission will decide who will represent which constituency after the election.

He claimed if his proposal is accepted, the use of black money and influence of muscle power will disappear in national elections.

“The reform proposal came in the wake of the prevailing political crisis so that it could be overcome. If all accept the proposal with an open mind, I hope we’ll see the light of hope,” he said in his written speech.
