Nur: July uprising a symbol of unity, not division

'Everyone should stay away from statements that create division'

Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, said on Tuesday that the July uprising is not a symbol of division but of unity.

Nur made the comment at a discussion titled “From the quota reform movement to the state reform movement (2018–2024),” organized by the Gono Odhikar Parishad at the Shafiqul Kabir Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity.

He said: "Many parties believe they can come to power and refuse to accept anything. Everyone should stay away from statements that create division.”

He further said: “A few days ago in London, the chief adviser’s comments about banning the Awami League were unfortunate. We are disappointed by the chief adviser’s remarks on banning the Awami League. Even if others compromise, the Gono Odhikar Parishad will not compromise on the Awami League issue.

"Many are also talking about bringing back the Jatiya Party. We are clear—the Jatiya Party is an ally of the Awami League. We will not compromise on the 14-party alliance issue. No political party or adviser will be spared on this matter.”

Nur continued: “From the beginning, we have been calling for the formation of a national government. Because there is no national government, this situation has arisen. Everyone is acting in their own way. Some parties think they are coming to power by themselves.”

Observing that the current Advisory Council lacks the capacity to conduct a national election, Nur said: “Abu Sayed’s father mentioned in a television interview that they did not receive state cooperation. Why does this grievance still exist? The government bears responsibility for this.”

Noting that most leaders at the National Consensus Commission talks express discord, the Gono Odhikar Parishad president called for holding a referendum if necessary.
