Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said the party maintains a firm stance against mobocracy and has no intention of retreating from that position.
He made the statement on Monday, following a liaison committee meeting held at the BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka.
Khasru said the BNP is committed to establishing a tolerant and respectful political culture in Bangladesh, and there is no scope for deviating from this principle.
He added that individuals involved in mob activities are acting on personal motives, which are not reflective of the party’s position.
“The BNP will take disciplinary action based on its own processes and will not apply different standards for different individuals.”
Addressing the issue of the upcoming national election, he mentioned that the nation is collectively moving towards an election in the first half of February.
Responding to questions from journalists regarding the announcement of the election schedule, he pointed out that nomination submission deadlines, scrutiny dates, and polling day are usually announced closer to the actual election, as has been the case in previous instances.
He stressed that this has been the standard practice in every election, and therefore, a little patience is necessary.
Khasru reaffirmed that the country is decisively moving towards an election in the first half of February. Discussions held in London between the chief adviser and the BNP's acting chairman concerning a February election timeline have been received positively by the public, he added.
Earlier apprehensions among the populace have now dissipated, he said, as the entire nation has entered an electoral trajectory.
He said there is now a unified commitment to restoring democracy, institutionalizing democratic governance, and upholding the political, constitutional, and democratic rights of the people.
