US Chargé d’Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson met with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party chairperson's office in Gulshan on Sunday morning, where the two sides discussed bilateral issues.
BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Organizing Secretary Shama Obaed were also present at the meeting.
Following the meeting, Amir Khasru told reporters at a media briefing that the US envoy and her team held an extensive discussion on bilateral issues, with particular emphasis on the tariff imposed by the United States on Bangladeshi products.
“They sought our opinion regarding the tariff issue. We believe that it is important to cooperate with the government to find a solution. If tariffs on Bangladeshi products are raised significantly, it will have a serious impact on our garment exports,” he said.
“BNP is willing to work with the government to ensure a fair resolution to this issue.”
Khasru added that the discussion also covered ways to enhance trade and investment between the two countries.
In response to a question about whether the upcoming elections were discussed, the BNP leader said that the topic naturally came up.
“The meeting between the chief adviser and Tarique Rahman in London was appreciated. They (the US side) understand the significance of that meeting, which has brought some relief to the country and set it on a path toward elections,” he said.
“Everyone is aware that we are moving toward a democratic transition, and there is a growing sense of relief across the nation,” Khasru added.
