The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has lodged a formal complaint to the Election Commission (EC) against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 18 others, alleging violations of the Constitution and electoral misconduct during the national elections held in 2014, 2018 and 2024.

On Sunday morning, a five-member BNP delegation, led by Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the party’s National Executive Committee, submitted the complaint to the EC.

Salahuddin Ahmed said that, in addition to Sheikh Hasina, the complaint names three former chief election commissioners, other commissioners, secretaries and a number of unidentified individuals.

He further mentioned that the names of certain law enforcement officials, allegedly involved in excessive enthusiasm during the electoral process, have also been included in the complaint for the Commission to investigate and take appropriate action.

He added that while specific names of deputy commissioners (DCs), superintendents of Police (SPs), divisional commissioners and other officials were not mentioned in the complaint, legal action would be initiated against them as well.

Salahuddin Ahmed noted: “In 2018, I came to the Election Commission 17 times to submit complaints on behalf of the BNP. However, I was allowed entry only seven or eight times. The rest of the time, I was denied access. A copy of the complaint submitted during that period has also been resubmitted to the chief election commissioner today (Sunday). He received the documents and assured us that necessary legal measures will be taken.”

He concluded by stating that, since the accused have committed criminal offenses by violating the Constitution, the BNP intends to file a case against them at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station later on Sunday.
