Nur: Public worried about election atmosphere

'When individuals like us are held hostage, it indicates what kind of election might take place; that is why ensuring a level playing field is essential before anything else,' says Nurul Haque Nur

Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, has said the public remains concerned about the overall electoral environment, as the situation has largely remained unchanged since August 5.

“When individuals like us are held hostage, it gives a clear indication of what kind of election might take place. That is why ensuring a level playing field is essential before anything else,” Nur said at a media briefing on Tuesday, the second day of the second phase of dialogues between political parties and the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.

Speaking about a recent attack in his local electoral constituency in Patuakhali, Nur said that although he was elected vice president in 2019 in the first Ducsu elections in 28 years and despite enduring torture during earlier pro-democracy movements, leaders like him still face obstacles after the July uprising, which he finds deeply concerning.

He told journalists that most political parties participating in the dialogue reached a consensus on matters such as the importance of the opposition in budget bills, votes of confidence and parliamentary standing committees.

Nur added that the Gono Odhikar Parishad agreed to the proposal of increasing the number of reserved seats for women to 100.
