Nasiruddin Patwary: BNP-led one-party dominance beginning to emerge

The NCP leader criticized the joint statement issued by the BNP and the chief adviser’s office, questioning the legitimacy of such an act

The National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organizer Nasiruddin Patwary on Friday warned that a BNP-led one-party dominance, which he referred to as “Ziashal,” is beginning to emerge in the aftermath of the July uprising.

"After our great War of Independence in '71, we saw Baksal. And now after this mass uprising of '24, we're starting to see Ziashal," Patwary told Dhaka Tribune on Friday.

Patwary also expressed concerns over pushing for an election without reforming the Election Commission and without completing the judicial processes.

"Ignoring the sacrifices people made with their lives - this mere election would push Bangladesh into crisis," he added.

Patwary further alleged that in the name of democracy, fascism is now being established through democracy itself.

He further told Dhaka Tribune that the people have been fighting for judicial reform, then Election Commission reform, for the past 15 years.

"Even the BNP itself was fighting, and many BNP members were harmed, many became victims of cases, enforced disappearances, and killings," he added.

Patwary also warned the interim government, citing instances where Sheikh Hasina had attempted to make decisions bypassing the will of the people—decisions that were ultimately rejected as the public rose up against what he described as a fascist system imposed on them.

“If the current government, which came to power with the people's mandate, uses that position to favor a particular party through backdoor compromises, the people will not accept it,” Patwary told Dhaka Tribune.

He also criticized the joint statement issued by the BNP and the chief adviser’s office, questioning the legitimacy of such an act. “How can a government and a political party release a joint statement?” he said.

“This is not just the National Citizen Party's stance—this raises fundamental questions about the very existence of the Bangladeshi state,” Patwary added.

Similarly, Ariful Islam Adib, senior joint convener of the National Citizen Party, told Dhaka Tribune that the joint statement between the chief adviser and BNP’s acting chairman reflects “discriminatory treatment towards other political parties.”

He further argued that before announcing any election date, the July Declaration must be implemented, judicial reforms completed, and the Election Commission restructured.

He emphasized that all stakeholders, including the families of martyrs, should be consulted in the process.
