'We want a level playing field ahead of the polls'

Update : 09 Jun 2025, 05:06 PM

Sarjis Alam, principal organizer (northern region) of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has said that his party has no objection to holding the next general election in April next year if the necessary reforms are visibly in place before the polls.

“We have no objection to holding the election in April if we can see that the trials and basic reforms in the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and the Election Commission are visible by that time,” he said.

Sarjis made the comment while speaking to journalists at the Chowrangi crossing on Monday.

“In the past, we have seen the misuse of power and black money during election periods. We want a level playing field ahead of the polls,” he said.

“We hope that all political parties, whether small or large, will get equal opportunities and be allowed to take part in the election with their full capacity,” Sarjis added.

The NCP leader also said that power should not be misused to victimize anyone. “We do not want to witness any further incidents of polling centres being captured or ballot papers being looted in future elections.”

He emphasized that the interim government must demonstrate professionalism through necessary reforms in the law enforcement agencies, the Election Commission, and the judiciary.

Principal Organizer of NCP (southern region) Hasnat Abdullah and Coordinator of Panchagarh Sadar Upazila Tanbirul Bari Nayon were also present.

Earlier, Sarjis, along with Hasnat, exchanged Eid greetings with party leaders and workers.
