Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of the country’s Islamist outfit Jamaat-e-Islami, vandalised and torched two vehicles, including a police van, during a protest procession in the Enayet bazar and Jubilee Road areas, Kotoali upazila in Chittagong this morning.
The Shibir activists also blasted around 15-20 cocktails at Enayet bazar when the procession began around 10:30am, torching a private car.
The pickets moved to Jubilee Road from Enayat bazar, where they were chased by law enforcers.
“The police have fired around 150 tear shells to disperse the procession,” Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Kotoali Cricle Mirza Saem Mahmud told the Dhaka Tribune.
The activists had torched a police van at Jubilee Road when the van had tried to block the procession, locals said.
Two policemen – Sub-Inspector AB Ali and Nayek Pratap – were injured during the incident.
Tension remains in the city and everyday life is being hindered because of the unrest.
Meanwhile, the police arrested three suspects in connection with the vandalism. Of them, a student of Chittagong College was identified as a Shibir activist.
