Nahid: No new Bangladesh without new constitution

A new constitution can help re-establish trust and connection between the state and its people, says NCP Convener Nahid Islam

There is no need to build a new Bangladesh without first drafting a new constitution, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has said.

He made the remark at a discussion on constitutional reform at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka on Sunday.

Nahid said: "The previous constitutions had failed to protect human rights. A new constitution can help re-establish trust and connection between the state and its people."

“We must move toward fundamental reforms,” he added.

“Consensus on trivial issues without agreement on the basics will not yield meaningful results.”

Referring to the call for banning the Awami League’s politics, he said: “Part of the judicial process has already advanced. What is now needed is a clear presentation of the judicial roadmap, which will build public trust.”

He further stated that if there is consensus on reform, no one should object to the election process.

“I hope we will be able to move forward soon through mutual understanding,” he added.
