BNP Vice Chairman Ahmed Azam Khan has said that anyone seeking to delay the electoral process would be betraying the spirit of the mass uprising scheduled for August 5.

"We want to return to democracy as soon as possible, inspired by the spirit of the uprising. For that to happen, Bangladesh must hold a free and fair parliamentary election. Without it, restoring democracy will not be possible," he told reporters before attending an extended meeting of Basail upazila unit of BNP on Saturday afternoon.

He further said the previous fascist government only spoke about development rather than democracy, while the current administration is now talking about reforms before democracy. "The people's expectation is to return to democracy, establish the rule of law, and secure justice. Since people's rights have not been established, we continue our movement."

Ahmed Azam Khan said uncertainty persists across the country and within the BNP regarding the activities of the interim government.

"Prices of daily essentials are rising again. Bangladesh’s international economic ratings are falling. Foreign investment has declined significantly, while domestic investment has almost hit zero. The country is once again heading toward an economic crisis," he added.

The meeting was presided over by acting president of the upazila BNP Mamun Al Jahangir. Among others, district BNP President Hasanuzzaman Shaheen, General Secretary Farhad Iqbal, and former joint secretary Abul Kashem also addressed the event.
