Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said that any attempt to bring a party to power through elections without necessary reforms and ensuring accountability for the mass killings during the July will not be accepted and will be resisted by the party.
The NCP chief made the statement while speaking to journalists on Wednesday at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar, where he paid tribute to the Liberation War martyrs.
“We aspire to establish a democratic system where no more bloodshed will be necessary. The independence of 1971 and 2024 are not contradictory. What we sought in 1971 has been achieved through [the uprising of] 2024.”
Nahid asserted that those attempting to create a division between the struggles of 1971 and 2024 have ulterior motives.
He emphasized that elections conducted without necessary reforms and ensuring justice will not be accepted.
Nahid also alleged that there is an ongoing effort to impose the old constitution and rehabilitate fascism.
According to him, a hasty election is being orchestrated to seize power, a move he said the people will not tolerate.
