BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir warned on Tuesday that recent election campaigns, marked by large convoys of up to 100 vehicles, suggest that such practices may continue in future political activities.
Fakhrul made the comment while presiding over a discussion in the city on the occasion of the 55th Independence Day.
The event was organized by BNP at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) Auditorium.
“We can clearly understand the intentions of those who engage in election campaigns with a fleet of 100 cars,” the BNP leader said, indirectly referring to NCP leader Sarjis Alam.
Fakhrul emphasized that BNP stands with the people and will continue to do so, as it has in the past.
“BNP will definitely be victorious,” he said.
Addressing the leaders and activists, he said that the future of Bangladesh depends on them.
“The future of democratic Bangladesh depends on you. The future of an anti-discrimination Bangladesh depends on you,” he added.
Noting that elections are essential, Fakhrul emphasized that they are the gateway to democracy.
“We believe there is no other system besides democracy that can bring welfare to the people,” he said.
However, he warned that a new conspiracy is underway to prolong or delay the electoral process, help others, and create anarchy in the country.
The BNP leader also criticized the emergence of new so-called leaders on social media.
“I don’t know where they want to take Bangladesh. Their language, words, sentences, and statements seem to lead the country toward anarchy. They don’t want to guide it towards democracy. So, today we must be cautious,” he said.
Pointing out that BNP has always saved the country from crises, Fakhrul noted that a new crisis has arisen.
“This crisis is such that there are ongoing attempts to make our patriotic army controversial, which we cannot accept at all,” he said.
“We can never allow those who protect our country and stand by us in times of crisis to be tarnished,” he added.
