BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed his expectation that the interim government will prioritize holding the upcoming general election above all else.

Speaking virtually from London on Wednesday at an iftar discussion event organized in honour of politicians at the Ladies Club in Eskaton, Tarique said while ensuring public safety and minimizing public suffering was essential, at the same time, the government must give utmost priority to the election to establish a democratic government accountable to the people.

"This is the expectation of all democracy-loving citizens.”

He added: "The BNP is committed to repairing the state and the political system through an elected national government to establish a just, secure, democratic and humanitarian Bangladesh for the present and future generations.

"To fulfil this goal, if the BNP is entrusted with the responsibility of running the state in the upcoming national election, we will form a national government consisting of representatives from pro-democracy political parties and elected public representatives, a commitment we have made to the nation before.”

Calling on leaders and activists of pro-democracy political parties, he said: “Conspiracies against unity persist on the streets, stained with the blood of thousands of martyrs in the mass uprising. If we all remain united, if freedom-loving people stand together, no conspiracy will succeed."

In his speech as the event’s chair, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said: “We have made it clear that the election must be held without delay, with minimal reforms, so that we can establish a parliament that truly represents the people. We need a representative government that will determine how and in what manner future reforms will take place.”
