PM must bow to people’s demand: BNP

Update : 11 Sep 2013, 08:46 PM

The main opposition BNP on Wednesday said the government must give in to people’s demand for an election under a non-partisan government.

The prime minister must have to change her mind about the polls-time government in the same way as she did about joining the UN General Assembly, said BNP standing committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain.

Mosharraf was addressing a discussion held at the Institution of Engineers to mark the jail release day of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

“We can now easily understand the situation of the prime minister and the government,” said the leader.

He added that the government must have to shoulder the responsibility if it pushed the country to an uncertainty holding the election partially.

The BNP leader also said their limit of patience was expiring and their backs were against the wall.

“We have no other options except waging nonstop movement to realise the demand for an election under a non-partisan government,” he said.

In his address, BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the government was formulating various laws only to stop the movement against it and to gag BNP activists.

The government was going to formulate a law that would prevent the political parties from holding rallies and meeting at their will, he said.

Fakhrul alleged the government was formulating new broadcast policy just to control the media.

“BNP is against the broadcast policy. People will not accept any law that takes away their fundamental rights including freedom of expression,” Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader claimed that the government already knew that they won’t be able to assume the office if free and fair polls were held.

“People want get rid of the government. So, to meet people’s demand, we will have to wage non-stop tough movement,” he said.

Pointing to the reformists, another BNP Standing Committee Member ASM Hannan Shah said he did not get anyone beside him during the 1/11 changeover.

Mirza Abbas, another standing committee member of the party, said a section of BNP hatched conspiracy against the party during the army-backed caretaker government.

That group was still active within the party to make BNP chief agree to take part in the next election, which would push the party into an awkward situation, he said.
