Nahid: No place for Awami League in Bangladesh politics

There will be no election before Awami League and Sheikh Hasina are tried in court, says National Citizen Party Convener Md Nahid Islam

Update : 10 Mar 2025, 08:47 PM

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Md Nahid Islam has said the fascist politics of the Awami League will no longer have a place in the Bangladeshi political arena.

“We believe that the people of the country already delivered their verdict against the Awami League on August 5. No election will be held in the country before the trial of the Awami League and Sheikh Hasina,” Nahid said during an iftar and prayer gathering organized by the NCP at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Monday.

The event was held in honor of the injured fighters of the July uprising and families of the martyrs.

Nahid emphasized: "The government and political parties must clarify their stance on the Awami League. Families of martyrs have filed cases against Sheikh Hasina and her associates. We must understand the expectations of these families regarding justice.”

“Who will guarantee that, after holding trials and elections, another government will not rehabilitate these fascists and murderers?” he asked.

Dismissing allegations that the NCP seeks to delay elections, Nahid said: “Accusing us of wanting to postpone elections is a tactic to delay justice and reforms. We urge all parties to reach a consensus on justice and reforms."

"The government must immediately announce a roadmap for the prosecution of criminals and the reform process. We need clear steps outlining how and when justice and reforms will be carried out,” he added.

Calling for the abolition of the constitution and the election of a constituent assembly, he added: “We were the ones who appointed Dr Yunus as the chief adviser of the interim government. The advisers and the army chief committed to justice and reforms. If they forget their commitments, we will hold them accountable.”

Meanwhile, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said: “Those who killed our brothers during the July uprising must be brought to justice. Sheikh Hasina must be held accountable in court.”

Expressing his reaction, the father of six-year-old martyr Jabir Ibrahim from Uttara said: “Justice for the martyrs and the injured must come first. Reforms must take place. No election will be held before that.”

Besides, July warrior Ashiq Shahriar declared: “We will remain united in bringing the murderers to justice. We will act with a cool head and maintain order—there will be no chaos.”
