BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the roadmap for the national elections must be announced by the chief adviser by the middle of March. Otherwise, a decision will be made regarding the next political program involving all democratic forces.
He made these statements as the chief guest at a discussion session organized by the National Research Foundation at the Diploma Engineering Institute in Kakrail, Dhaka, on Saturday.
Salahuddin Ahmed said: “Khaleda Zia had established parliamentary democracy in the country. The introduction of the caretaker government was her political foresight. Had it remained in place, perhaps the bloodshed of 2024 would not have occurred.”
He added “If the Awami League resumes its political activities, it would be a failure of our political strategy. Therefore, we must confront the Awami League through positive actions.
He said: "August 5 is when the politics of the Awami League has been sealed."
He addressed the chief adviser, saying, "(You) have told foreign media that the election will be in December. However, it should have been the courage to say this directly to the country's media. Beating about the bush is not appropriate."
He congratulated the new party for the establishment of multi-party democracy, saying: "We want democracy to bloom with a hundred flowers. However, I consider their demand for a constituent assembly to be questionable. Those who are talking about a constituent assembly and the second republic are aiming to prolong state power."
Salahuddin Ahmed said: "Those who are talking about local elections before the national elections have different motives. Because they fear their position in the national election."
He added: “The '24 movement was not for the demand of local elections. Everyone should consider this and speak accordingly.”
He called on everyone to play a united role for the sake of the country.
The discussion on "The sacrifice and leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman in the struggle for the restoration of democracy" and the unveiling of the book "Beloved Leader Khaleda Zia" was presided over by the former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury.
The event was conducted by the general secretary of NRF Foundation, Farid Uddin Ahmed, and the speech was given by the chief guest, BNP Senior Joint Secretary Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
