Zainul Abedin Farroque, BNP chairperson’s adviser, has said there is no need for extensive reforms to hold a neutral election like the one in 1991.
Speaking during a discussion organized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Cultural Party’s central committee in front of the National Press Club on Friday, the BNP leader said the necessary reforms are those that would allow the public to buy rice at Tk40 per kg.
Farroque also called for the immediate announcement of the election date and supported the July uprising declaration.
He said it should include historical references to the Liberation War, the role of Khaleda Zia in the 1990 anti-autocracy movement and the sacrifices made by Shaheed Dr Milon as well as the false charges against Khaleda Zia that led to her imprisonment.
Addressing the interim government, Farroque criticized its actions, saying that the public disagree with some of them.
He highlighted that for the past 16 years, people have been denied freedom of speech, press freedom and the independence of the judiciary.
The politician warned that ignoring the struggles of the past 16 years and focusing only on the July uprising would not lead to a successful people’s uprising.
