Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan Manju, the newly elected chairman of the Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party, has said that if the government is sincere, elections can be held by December and reforms can pave the way for a fair election based on a national consensus or unity.
The newly elected first committee of the AB Party paid floral tributes at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists after the tribute, Manju said: "The government has mentioned two possible timelines: one in December this year and the other in June next year. We believe the timeline will depend on the framework and pace of the reforms.
"If the government is sincere, the election is possible by December. A fair election can be organized through reforms and national consensus. However, if necessary, we have no objection if the election is delayed by a month or two based on discussions."
During the event, AB Party General Secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuaad said: "The struggle of 1971 was the fight for the freedom of the masses of Bangladesh, which we call the republic. It aimed to rebuild Bangladesh with equality, human dignity, and social justice. Yet, 53 years later, hundreds of young people still had to shed blood to renew that fight. Therefore, we urge the interim government of Bangladesh and all active in the anti-fascist movement to recognize the collective aspirations of 1971 and 2024."
He added: "Our youth have expressed their demands through wall writings—Bangladesh seeks reforms, change, a new political structure, and safeguards against the return of fascism. This is what we reaffirmed today. The AB Party's struggle to rebuild Bangladesh continues, and with our resources, we will do our part."
