Hasnat Abdullah: No more repetition of political violence in country

He praised youth for breaking free from fascist chains in July

Update : 02 Jan 2025, 11:47 PM
The convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Hasnat Abdullah has said that the country must move forward without repeating the cycle of political violence and unrest.

He said: "We do not want a repetition of the politics of the past, where losing power meant fleeing the country. We want a kind of politics where even if you lose power, people will respect you. We do not want the past incidents of enforced disappearances, murders, killings, oppression, and persecution. There may be differences of opinion between you and me, but on issues concerning Bangladesh, positive societal development, and enhancing social values, we must be united. Through the solidarity of unity, we aim to rebuild the country. We no longer want any recurrence of political violence or loss of life in the country."

He made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organized by the Jatiya Nagorik Committee on Thursday evening in the hall room of a restaurant in the Debidwar Upazila of Comilla.

Hasnat Abdullah further said: "The traditional political trends of Bangladesh must change. For generations, we have not been freed from the shackles of fascism. Bangladesh has been tightly bound by fascist chains—that is the harsh truth. However, after the July uprising, the fearless youth generation broke the shackles of fascism. The same generation we once considered lazy, always engaged with their mobile phones, is the one that ultimately gave us back our right to speak."

He said: "There was no right to vote, no right to conduct business freely, and even imams were restricted from delivering sermons in line with the Quran. Journalists were unable to maintain their professionalism freely, and both mainstream and social media were controlled by the fascist regime. This young generation has brought us freedom from all of this."

Hasnat Abdullah also said: "Strong syndicates have formed across the country, and these syndicates always remain united and beyond reach. They act against the welfare of the nation and its people. The youth generation must rise against them. By any means, we will break these syndicates and build a welfare-oriented state."
