The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has opposed the participation of the Awami League in any political activity.
In a press release issued on Thursday evening, the organization stated that allowing Awami League to partake in elections or other political events would devalue the sacrifices made during the July-August uprising.
The statement accused Awami League of being responsible for multiple massacres in Bangladesh, along with involvement in enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and human rights violations over the past 16 years.
It specifically blamed Awami League for the deaths of nearly 2,000 people and injuries to over 30,000 during the July massacre, referring to the party as a "notorious organization."
The press release also rejected remarks made by Election System Reform Commission Chair Badiul Alam Majumdar, criticizing his stance on the matter.
The group urged authorities to take appropriate measures to prevent Awami League's participation in elections, asserting that the party’s actions in the past three elections were illegal and marred the electoral system.
In response to questions regarding Awami League's participation in elections, Majumdar earlier on Thursday in Rangpur said: "I do not see any obstacles created for them. However, I have no authority to comment further on this matter."
He said these during a discussion on election system reforms with local administration, political parties and civil society at the Rangpur Deputy Commissioner’s office.
In the statement, signed by spokesperson Umama Fatema, the student movement declared that Awami League's involvement in any political activity contradicts public aspirations, as the party tarnished Bangladesh’s electoral process through manipulation and malpractice.
