Gonosonghoti Andolon’s chief coordinator Zonayed Saki has called for replacing the 1972 Constitution, alleging that it failed to represent the aspirations of the people and was designed to solidify a centralized power structure.

He said that the 1972 Constitution laid the groundwork for Baksal and emphasized the need to establish a truly democratic state by replacing it.

Speaking during a public dialogue titled “Towards a New Political Settlement for Democratic Transformation of the State” at Saheb Bazaar Zero Point in Rajshahi on Saturday, Saki argued that eliminating inequality requires the creation of a democratic constitution to replace the current one.

He further said that a new political framework inspired by the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War is necessary and urged the people to form their own political party to reflect their will.

Saki highlighted the need for comprehensive electoral reforms and urged the new Election Commission to set a precedent to prevent future governments from manipulating it to suppress voters' rights. He asserted that if the country wants an equitable state, it needs a democratic constitution instead of the current one.

Referring to recent student movements, Saki said that when dignity is at stake, people are willing to sacrifice everything. He commended the courage of students who protested despite repression and demonstrated that intimidation cannot silence the masses.

Criticizing the current governance, Saki accused Sheikh Hasina of undermining state institutions for political gain.

He alleged that figures like General Aziz and Benazir Ahmed enriched themselves while eroding institutional integrity. Saki stressed that those who have looted and corrupted must face justice, asserting that accountability is the cornerstone of a new Bangladesh.

He also warned public officials against supporting corrupt regimes, emphasizing that no government employee should compromise their duties to enable an illegal administration, and that the people of Bangladesh will hold them accountable.

Saki emphasized the importance of building a united political front to challenge the existing power structure.

He said that while Bangladeshis have bid farewell to fascist rule and are yearning for a new political force, it is crucial to unify the masses and establish this force before the next election.

The event was presided over by Gonosonghoti Andolon Rajshahi district president Advocate Murad Morshed, with central committee member Julhasnain Babu as a special guest. Rajshahi district member secretary Jewel Rana moderated the session, which was attended by individuals from diverse professional and political backgrounds.
