BNP’s acting chairperson Tarique Rahman has issued a strong condemnation of what he called “discourteous behavior” directed at Professor Asif Nazrul, the legal adviser to interim government.
He criticized the incident as a blow to the nation’s dignity, as Asif Nazrul reportedly faced aggressive behavior from a group of Awami League supporters outside Geneva Airport in Switzerland on Thursday evening while en route to France.
In a statement released on Friday, he said: “It is not only inappropriate but a severe blow to the dignity of our country and its people when a government adviser is treated disrespectfully on foreign soil.”
He added that incidents like this reflect an ongoing pattern of aggression linked to what he described as “fascist tactics” employed by Awami League supporters abroad.
The statement highlighted what he described as the continued manifestation of “violent fascism” among Awami League leaders and activists worldwide.
He said that such behavior reflects an allegiance to authoritarian politics and a disregard for democratic principles, human rights, rule of law, and citizen freedoms.
Tarique further alleged that Awami League hostility towards democratic movements is deeply rooted, citing Sheikh Hasina’s historical response to opposition movements.
“Failing to suppress student and public movements through bloody means, Sheikh Hasina’s anger remains unrestrained, as do the attacks by her supporters on democracy-loving people,” he said.
The BNP leader also accused the ousted Sheikh Hasina of attempting to destabilize Bangladeshi politics from abroad, adding that Awami League beneficiaries engaged in “looting” were now conspiring internationally.
He called for the identification and prosecution of those he described as “supporters of inhumane and irrational Awami fascism” to ensure they are held accountable under the law.
