The BNP has proposed the names of five individuals from the party for the Search Committee to form the new Election Commission.
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie handed over the list of names to Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdul Rashid on Wednesday.
The party's Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan confirmed the matter at 11pm.
However, the names of the five individuals proposed for the Search Committee have not yet been disclosed.
Earlier, the government had set a deadline for submitting names by Thursday, giving four days for political parties, professional organizations, and individuals to propose names.
The proposal is to suggest up to five names for the positions of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
The government formed the Search Committee on October 31 to recommend names for the new Election Commission, including the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other commissioners. The committee is chaired by Senior Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division.
The members of the Search Committee include Senior Justice AKM Asaduzzaman of the High Court, former Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC) Professor Jinnatun Nessa Tahmida Begum, former Professor of Dhaka University’s Department of International Relations Chowdhury Rafiqul Abbar, Auditor General Mohammad Nurul Islam, and PSC Chairman Mobashher Monem.
