Rizvi questions preoccupation with president's removal

'Sheikh Hasina has many allies among you—why are you not saying anything about them?'

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has raised concerns over the intense focus on the president's removal.

Speaking on Monday afternoon as chief guest at a program to raise awareness and distribute informational leaflets on dengue prevention in Dhaka, Rizvi addressed the interim government and said: "You have established the International Crimes Tribunal, where many will be tried. But if we get more involved in unproductive activities instead of our duties, creating political and constitutional voids, then the people will start speaking up."

"Why are you creating one complication after another? Sheikh Hasina has many allies among you—why are you not saying anything about them? Why are you so preoccupied solely with the president?"

Rizvi said: "Ali Imam Majumder, who held an important position during the 1/11 era, also held significant roles under Sheikh Hasina’s regime—you have made him an adviser (attached to the chief adviser's office). There are many such individuals; why do you not say anything about them?"

"Those who prolonged Sheikh Hasina's bloody misrule, those who did not utter a single word, and who served her loyally are still in prominent positions," he added.

The BNP spokesperson said: "Why are we creating complications in the country regarding whether the President remains in office or not? Why should we invite crises into the country? This is not the main issue. We have ousted Sheikh Hasina from the country, and it is our responsibility to bring her allies to justice under the law."

He added: "Those media outlets that shamelessly pandered to Sheikh Hasina, validating every wrongdoing of hers—where are your comments on them? We have seen channels like Ekattor TV and others praising Sheikh Hasina with prominent journalists and well-known media personalities."

"Why are you silent about them? Why is the focus only on the president?"

Rizvi said: "The people of this country will record the contributions of those who fought against discrimination on the path to democracy in history. A golden chapter will be written. But we must not act out of emotion in a way that could lead to any extra-constitutional developments."
