Update : 26 Oct 2024, 08:10 PM
A delegation of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens' Committee has held a discussion meeting with BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, as part of efforts to build consensus for the removal of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The meeting took place at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Saturday evening.

The seven-member delegation of the student leaders arrived at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office around 5:15pm, said BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

Alongside the Secretary General, BNP's Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie were also present.

Sayrul said Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Convener Hasnat Abdullah, Spokesperson Umama Fatema, and Chief Organiser Abdul Hannan Masud, along with National Citizens' Committee Convener Nasiruddin Patoari and Spokesperson Samantha Sharmin, as well as Akhter Hossain were present.

Following the call for the president's removal, Salahuddin Ahmed and two other top BNP leaders met with the chief adviser on October 23.

They said that they do not want to create any constitutional crisis at this time. The party believes that a vacancy in the presidency could lead to a constitutional and political crisis, which they wish to avoid.

Subsequently, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens' Committee took the initiative to discuss the removal of the president in order to build national unity among political parties.

As part of this effort, a meeting was held on Thursday night at Salahuddin Ahmed's residence with representatives from both groups. Senior BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also attended that meeting.

The student leaders of the movement and the citizens' committee are determined to exert pressure on the interim government to facilitate the removal of Shahabuddin from the presidency.
