Several Awami League leaders and activists were assaulted by BNP supporters in front of the National Press Club on Saturday around 12:30pm.
Eyewitnesses reported that a group of 10-15 Awami League activists had gathered at the location around noon to hold a human chain protest.
Upon knowing of their presence, 50-60 BNP activists arrived at the scene and chased them away.
During the confrontation, one Awami League activist was brutally beaten by 4-5 BNP supporters.
A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, where BNP activists can be heard shouting: “Catch them, catch the Awami League, catch them all, they are running away.”
As the Awami League members fled, one of them was heard saying: “No one can ever erase the history of the Awami League in this country. We were here, we are here, and we will remain, Insha'Allah.”
