Update : 01 Sep 2013, 06:39 PM

Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Jahangirnagar University unit Sunday allegedly beat up a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader on the campus.

Abdur Rahman Shaikat, a student of history and convener of AFM Kamaluddin Hall of JU unit Chhatra Dal, was taken to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar after preliminary treatment at the university medical centre.

Witnesses said Chhatra League activists Jewel Rana, Deen Md Shoaib, Enamul Haque Bhuiya and Tanvir Hasan Khan of AFM Kamaluddin Hall beat Shaikat with rods, iron pipes and wooden sticks around 1am in Bottola area where Shaikat had gone for his lunch.

Shaikat fainted being hit in the head, chest and other parts of the body.

Dr Shyamol Kumar Sheel, an assistant medical officer at JU medical centre, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Shaikat’s hands were seriously injured while there are serious injury marks all over his body.”

Prof Shamsul Alam Selim, secretary of pro-BNP teachers’ organisation Nationalist Teachers’ Forum, said there was no environment of coexistence on the campus as the authorities did not take any step regarding several incidents that had taken place earlier.

Chhatra Dal’s JU unit released a statement, demanding punishment to the attackers within 48 hours.

Its Organising Secretary Abdullah Al Mamun Rahat told the Dhaka Tribune: “We think the Chhatra League activists attacked Shaikat under the direct influence of the authorities.”

Mahmudur Rahman Jony, president of JU unit BCL, said: “I have heard about the incident and steps will be taken officially after an investigation.”

When contacted, JU Proctor Prof Dr Md Muzibur Rahman said proper steps would be taken against the attackers after an investigation by the proctorial team.
