BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy has said that his party will keep supporting the interim government for a certain period of time that it needs to hold a free and fair election.
Speaking at a rally organized by the BNP to mark the International Day of Democracy in Khulna on Tuesday, he said that the party would also accept and support the interim government's steps.
He said that the fascist government had fallen, but the countrymen had not gotten back democracy.
Pointing to the student movement that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government, Gayeshwar said that one must not see only 16 days of movement as the lone source of power that threw away the Awami League government since the BNP has been on the field for the last 16 years with the same goal.
He said that the party men would not retire until they could vote and their voting rights were ensured.
Pointing to some recent remarks by student movement leaders, Gayeshwar said: “Do not push us away; do not make us your opponent by delivering irresponsible speeches about the BNP and Tarique Rahman. The supporters will not sit idle if provocative speeches are made.”
“You have withdrawn the cases against you already, but you have not withdrawn a single case against us in all these days. Have we not sacrificed our blood for the fall of the fascist Hasina government?
“Our leaders have gone missing in thousands. Do not create discrimination in the name of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.”
Apart from Gayeshwar, the acting divisional secretary general of the party, Anindo Islam Amit, also spoke at the rally.
He said that the result of keeping pro-Awami League people in the administration would backfire. He said that the ideology of the student movement would be lost if the pro-Awami League people were kept within the administration.
The BNP leaders at the rally also demanded the withdrawal of Khulna Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam, terming him a supporter of Sheikh Hasina.
