The Left Democratic Alliance has called for the reconstitution of the Election Commission to initiate a free, fair, and impartial national parliamentary election process.
The call was made during a press conference on Sunday, held at the Maitree Hall of Mukti Bhaban in purana Paltan, Dhaka.
The statement declared that the country's electoral system has been destroyed.
It demanded an immediate overhaul of the electoral system, including the introduction of a “no” vote option, recall of elected representatives failing to meet public expectations, and the adoption of a proportional representation electoral system.
The Alliance urged democratic political parties to begin discussions on these reforms.
The written statement was delivered by Bazlur Rashid Firoz, general secretary of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (BaSoD).
Also present were Ruhin Hossain Prince, general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Iqbal Kabir Zahid, general secretary of the Revolutionary Communist League, Masud Rana, coordinator of the BaSoD (Marxist), Mosharrefa Mishu, general secretary of the Democratic Revolutionary Party, Abdul Ali, executive president of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, Mihir Ghosh, assistant general secretary of the CPB, and Rajekuzzaman Ratan, assistant general secretary of BaSoD, among others.
The statement mentioned that after the student-led uprising, the “Anti-Discrimination Student Movement” had stated that all political parties, civil society, and educators would be consulted in forming the government.
It is unknown whether discussions with other parties have taken place. However, even if the interim government did not consult with the Left Democratic Alliance, the statement called on the government to lead the country with the spirit of the popular uprising.
The press conference also called for an end to attacks on religious and ethnic minorities, looting, arson, killings, and other forms of violence and disorder.
It demanded that those responsible for these acts be identified and brought to justice.
