Jamaat's hartal now on Aug 13, 14

Update : 06 Aug 2013, 05:55 PM

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami rescheduled its nationwide 48-hour shutdown for August 13-14, a party statement said on Tuesday.

Earlier the Jamaat called a countrywide general strike for August 12 and 13 protesting a High Court verdict that declared the party's registration with the Election Commission illegal.

The party deferred the hartal in a media statement on Tuesday. The statement was signed by its acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam.

The government is trying to eliminate the Jamaat-Shibir. In the name of war crime against humanity, the government has arrested most of the senior Jamaat leaders who have been in custody for the last three years, said the media release.

Even Jamaat activists were not spared during Ramadan, the statement reads.

The statement said the party deferred the countrywide hartal to ease the journey of people from their village home to their respective working places after Eid holidays.
