Update : 27 Aug 2013, 07:41 PM

Stressing the importance of an immediate solution to the ongoing political turmoil, Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus warned on Tuesday that the nation would suffer badly in the event of of any chaos over the national elections.

“It is urgent to find out an amicable solution as early as possible to peacefully hold the election. The nation will surely pay a heavy price in case of any turmoil over the polls,” he said.

Yunus made the remark during a meeting with a delegation of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Gono Parishad at the city’s Yunus Centre.

He said the goal of establishing peace in the country, was the main objective of the Liberation War, still remained unfulfilled.

The Grameen Bank founder said the nation would be able to achieve a marked progress if peace would be established in the country. “We want peace, which begins with the holding of an election peacefully. We will vote the party which can bring peace in the country,” he added.

Dr Yunus, the former managing director of the Grameen Bank, said the people of Bangladesh and those elsewhere in the world do not understand “why the government is hostile to Grameen Bank and it undermines the microcredit organisation.”

He said the microcredit entity brought a laurel for the country by winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

Later, a delegation of Bangladesh Human Rights Commission met him and extended their full support to him. The rights body also awarded the National Human Rights Award 2013 to him.
