Three senior leaders of the BNP, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, visited former state minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku’s house in Dhaka on Thursday.

BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas and Dhaka south city unit Convener Abdur Salam accompanied Fakhrul during the visit at Asad Gate in Mohammadpur in the morning.

Tuku, a Standing Committee member who was sentenced to nine years in jail in a graft case, has been staying out of the country for months.

During the visit to Tuku’s house, Fakhrul and Abbas asked about the whereabouts of the party colleague and his family members, including Tuku’s wife, Rumana Mahmud.

Earlier in the day, Fakhrul and Abbas offered prayers at the grave of party founder General Ziaur Rahman at Chandrima Udyan around 11am.

On September 11 of last year, a special court in Dhaka issued an arrest warrant against him in a case filed over amassing illegal wealth worth Tk2.57 crore and concealing information in his wealth statement. It followed a trial court verdict on November 15, 2007, that handed Tuku the jail term in the case.

Meanwhile, senior BNP leaders and family members are expected to meet party chief Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan residence on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr on Thursday.

On March 27, the government extended the suspension of her jail term by six months. However, she will not be able to travel abroad and will have to seek medical treatment in Bangladesh, according to the government order.

The party has been demanding her unconditional release and permission to travel abroad for advanced treatment. The former prime minister has been suffering from various illnesses and receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital.
