Awami League Joint General Secretary and Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has said that the BNP was born undemocratically, and the party always tries to destroy democracy.

“It is very regretful that the party (BNP) is now talking about democracy,” he said while exchanging views with reporters in Chittagon's YNT Centre on Wednesday, reports BSS.

The minister also criticized the senior BNP leaders’ statements that the party is struggling to establish democracy.

He said Ziaur Rahman grabbed state power and distributed leftovers. The top leaders of the BNP, including Dr Moyeen Khan and Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, formed the party to get some benefits.

Dr Hasan said the BNP has always tried to destroy the country’s democracy. They carried out arson and petrol bomb attacks and killed innocent people in 2013-15.

The party was behind the BDR mutiny after the 2008 elections. It was done to overthrow the elected government and destroy democracy. They tried to destroy democracy in 2013, before the elections. There was a similar effort in the 2018 elections.

He added that boycotting the January 7 elections was the latest attempt to destroy democracy.
