Update : 16 Dec 2023, 01:54 PM

BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan on Saturday alleged that a game is being played in the name of national polls, and the result of the election has already been decided.

The result will be announced on January 7, He said while talking to journalists after paying tribute to the martyrs at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.

Demanding to stop the election, he said: “I demand to stop this game. People should not participate in this game. I request those associated with this election to have democratic, humane values in them.”

This BNP leader added: “We, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, have repeatedly re-established democracy in this country. Our leader martyred former President Ziaur Rahman restored democracy by fighting against the one-party rule. After fighting for nine years against Ershad's military dictatorship, our leader Begum Khaleda Zia re-established parliamentary democracy in the country. However, there is no democracy today.

Keeping the people of the country as witnesses, keeping the memorial as a witness, we want to say clearly that under the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, we will once again restore democracy in this country.”

People from all walks of life have flocked to the National Martyrs' Monument in Savar to celebrate Bangladesh’s 53rd Victory Day and pay their respects to the martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

On Saturday morning, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths.

As the day progressed, the number of people swelled, transforming the area into a vast sea of individuals, united to show their gratitude to the martyrs.

The Victory Day is a national holiday. It is celebrated on December 16 every year to commemorate the victory of Bangladesh against the Pakistani occupation forces in the Liberation War in 1971.

The Pakistani occupation army surrendered to the joint forces of Bangladesh and India ending the ninth-month blood-stained Liberation War to make Bangladesh an independent state.

Along with the government, different socio-political, educational and cultural institutions and organizations have chalked out a series of programs to celebrate the day.
