Security measures have been heightened in front of the National Press Club to avoid any untoward incidents as the opposition BNP has formed a human chain marking the International Human Rights Day on Sunday.

Additional police and water cannons were seen deployed in the area.

There were also plain-clothes law enforcement officers on the site.

The program began formally with the recitation from the holy Quran around 10:55am with BNP standing committee member Selima Rahman in the chair, and ended at 12:30pm.

However, leaders and activists of the opposition and other organizations were seen carrying small marches after that.

Top BNP leaders and family members of the victims of enforced disappearances and political killings took part in the human chain.

Several other central leaders including Afroz Abbas and Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia participated in the human chain program.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday announced to form human chains across the country, including in the capital together with the family members of victims of enforced disappearance and political killings, marking International Human Rights Day.
