Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said the core leadership of the BNP has been detained in their own prison, making it impossible for them to participate in any elections.
Hasan Mahmud, joint general secretary of Awami League, said: "The BNP leadership has made their party leaders incapable of contesting any elections—be it parliamentary, district, or union parishad elections—by confining them to their so-called prison."
He made these comments while replying to the ministry conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday.
Many of the BNP leaders have come out and submitted nomination papers. Former BNP parliamentarians and central committee members have also submitted nomination papers. Many BNP leaders admit that these decisions are gradually leading the party towards destruction, he added.
He said that there is no public support for the BNP's anti-government protests such as blockades and general strikes.
The Awami League leader said that there is not a unanimous decision among the BNP's core leadership regarding the blockade and strike. The entire agenda of the BNP has been revealed; let's hope they change their ways and start a constructive political dialogue again
Regarding Transparency International Bangladesh's observation that there is no visible participation in an inclusive election, Hasan said: "The TIB will see the participation on the election day."
