Two senior leaders of the opposition party were arrested around 8:15pm on Tuesday.
Police arrested Mirza Abbas from Shahidbagh Mosque lane area near Shahjahanpur while Alal was arrested from a branch of Dhaka Bank in Shahidbag area.
Md Jahidur Rahman, personal secretary of Alal, also confirmed his arrest.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman said that the police arrested them over the charges of killing a police constable and carrying out atrocities in the city during the BNP's grand rally on Saturday, reports BSS.
They were taken to the DB office, he added.
Law enforcers earlier on Sunday raided the houses of both leaders following serious violence in the city’s Naya Paltan and Kakrail areas on Saturday centring BNP’s grand rally, but they did not find them there.
Abbas and Alal were made accused in a case filed in connection with the killing of a police constable Amirul Islam Parvez.
Earlier, a Dhaka court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant against Mirza Abbas after dismissing his time petition in a graft case filed against him in 2007.
The case was filed on charge of amassing wealth through illegal means and providing false information about wealth to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Judge Monjurul Imam of Dhaka's Special Judge Court-6 set November 2 for arguments from the prosecution, said ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir.
Earlier in the day, Advocate Mohi Uddin Chowdhury said Mirza Abbas's absence was due to illness.
The prosecution, however' opposed the defence pleas on grounds that the petitions were filed just to delay the trial proceedings.
The court recorded statements of 24 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.
On August 16, 2007, the ACC filed the case with Ramna Police Station against Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas for amassing wealth worth over Tk 5.67 crore beyond known sources of income and concealing wealth statement of Tk 23 lakh to the commission.
The ACC on May 14, 2008 pressed charges against Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas in the case.
