Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Saturday said BNP and Jamaat have fled from Naya Paltan because they attacked Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan’s house.
He made the comment at the Awami League peace rally in front of Baitul Mukarram’s south gate.
Earlier in the day, clashes took place in front of the capital's Kakrail intersection, the High Court area and the chief justice's residence.
BNP activists vandalized the gate of the chief justice's residence. The incident took place at around 1pm.
The BNP activists broke tree branches and attacked the nameplate and gate with sticks. They also started throwing bricks inside.
The grand rally of the BNP which began in front of its Naya Paltan central office on Saturday morning got suspended in the afternoon following police action.
The rally was suspended at 2:15pm as police fired rubber bullets, sound grenades, and lobbed tear gas shells, forcing the BNP leaders and activists to leave the rally venue.
The BNP leaders also set fire to papers on the streets protesting the police attack.
A tense situation has been prevailing in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan area amid a huge presence of police, RAB, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
