Update : 14 Aug 2013, 05:51 PM

At least 50 people were injured as local activists of the ruling Awami League and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party locked in a clash at Gullia village, Mohammadpur upazila, Magura on Tuesday.

Of the injured, 10 were admitted to various hospitals in the district in critical conditions while the rest received first aid.

Officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur police station Manirul Islam said AL leader Mizanur Rahman and BNP leader Mujibur Rahman had long been at loggerheads over different issues relating to establishing supremacy in the area.

Around 1:30pm on the day, a brawl took place between some supporters of the leaders at a local tea stall over a trifling matter.

Later, both the groups equipped themselves with lethal weapons and attacked each other, leaving 50 people from both sides injured.

On information, police from Mohammadpur and sadar police stations rushed to the spot and fired seven rounds of rubber bullets and lobbed several teargas canisters to disperse them, added the OC.

During the clash, which lasted for one and a half hours, 10 houses were also vandalised and looted. A case was filed in connection with these incidents.
