Update : 13 Aug 2013, 06:56 PM

A parliamentary watchdog thanked Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, who came under fierce criticism from the opposition and the media for her 517-day overseas stay since she took office in January 2009.

The parliamentary standing committee on foreign ministry at its meeting on Tuesday observed that the foreign minister’s trips yielded positive contribution to improving relations with other nations.

The meeting decided that at least five of its 10 members would visit Milan, Portugal, Greece and Mauritius for nine days with the ministry funding. They would see for themselves the functions of the Bangladesh missions in the cities.

An Awami League lawmaker and Standing Committee Chairman Begum Nilufer Zafar Ullah (Faridpur-4), committee members Imran Ahmad, Emaj Uddin Pramanik and Nazma Akhter of the Awami League and lone representative of the BNP AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon are the members to go on tours.

Begum Nilufer Zafar Ullah declined to talk to the press on the standing committee members’ upcoming tours.

“We have thanked the foreign minister for the overseas tours as the trips were aimed at improving Bangladesh’s relations with other countries,” Nazma Akhter said on Tuesday after the meeting at the parliament building.
