Info Minister: No reason to be thrilled about US visa restrictions

  • Bangladesh on good terms with the US
  • BNP would make many comments, says the minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday said there is no reason for anyone to be thrilled about the US visa policy.

“This policy will apply only to those who obstruct elections,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote in Dhaka on Sunday.

BNP will say many things about the policy, and so will the newspapers, but there is no point in it, he added.

“Our relationship with the US is very good. The prime minister's recent meeting with the US president is proof of that. Our cooperation and multi-dimensional relationship with them is getting stronger day by day,” he added.

He said that there has been a continuous conspiracy against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since 1971, yet she remains undeterred by such efforts.

On Friday, the US Department of State said it is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on Bangladeshi individuals responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh.

These individuals include members of law enforcement agencies, the ruling party, and the political opposition, the US State Department said in a statement.

It, however, did not disclose the names of those individuals.

On May 24, the US announced that it would be able to restrict the issuance of visas for any Bangladeshi individuals.

The US notified the Bangladeshi government of this decision on May 3.
