Update : 04 Aug 2023, 10:35 PM

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday accused the government of retaining its power through the manipulation of the police, administration, and judiciary.

“The time of illegitimate government is over. The fall of this government is imminent,” he said at the party’s rally organized at Naya Paltan protesting the verdict against the party's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman.

Mirza Fakhrul said: “Dr Zubaida Rahman who is not involved in politics, is a prominent doctor. Her family property is worth tens of thousands of crores of taka, she has been sentenced for FDR of several lakhs of taka. A corruption case has been filed against Tarique Rahman. Corruption also happened during the Pakistan period, during Ayub Khan's regime, corruption cases were also filed against leaders and activists.”

He also claimed that those who illegally assumed power used the judiciary against Tarique Rahman and his wife.

Mirza Fakhrul also claimed that Awami League’s corruption has reached all levels, it is also being published in newspapers and magazines.

“So panic has spread among them... Begum Khaleda Zia was detained over a false case. Thousands of our leaders and activists have been detained. There is only one way to end this and that is to oust the government. This government has to be ousted and there is no time. This government must go.

“We don't care what the US or India says. We have to listen to what the people are saying,” he said.

Addressing the ruling party, he added: “If you want to play, come to the streets leaving power.”

Meanwhile, BNP National Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said: “The court is doing mockery in the name of justice. The judiciary is now a factory of injustice. The fall of this government is inevitable.”

He also said: “I was on the streets on that day on July 29. No leader or activists left me. If they had left me alone, my body would have been in the Postogola crematorium.”

Nazrul Islam Khan, another member of the party's standing committee said: “If the movement is to be successful, this government must be ousted and a people's government will be established. Fair elections had been held in the country since the war of liberation. Especially after the establishment of the BNP, they have been defeated by the BNP every time. They won only by farce election.”

Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, said: “The government is playing tricks on the constitution. The constitution that Awami League talks about is a hoax. The people of Bangladesh cannot be suppressed by this deception. They talk about the constitution verbatim. That constitution says there are three pillars of a state. One is parliament; currently, a mock parliament has been created.”

BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas and Convener of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP Amanullah Aman, among others also spoke at the rally.

BNP's Dhaka metropolitan north and south units jointly arranged the protest rally on Friday afternoon.

The rally started in front of the party's central office in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan at 2:48pm.
