Rizvi: President’s dialogue on EC is an eyewash

This president belongs to the government, says the BNP leader

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday claimed President Abdul Hamid’s dialogue with political parties on the reconstitution of the Election Commission was nothing but an eyewash.

“The dialogue that the president is holding on behalf of the illegitimate government is a complete betrayal of the people and voters of the country. The Awami League government will one day be held accountable for the magic and bioscope being done in the name of a dialogue,” he said.

The BNP leader made the remarks after paying tribute to former president and BNP founding chairman Ziaur Rahman at his grave in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

In response to a question from reporters, Rizvi said: "When BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia took part in the dialogue with the president, we did not see a voter-less election like in 2014."

He also mentioned that the law on the formation of the Election Commission had not been enacted yet, and there was no hint of establishing a neutral polls-time government. “So, what is the president talking about without these things?”

He urged the president to listen to the demands of the people.

“This president belongs to the government. None of those who were elected to parliament was elected by the votes of the people. This president will not do anything beyond what the government says, so a neutral government is needed for a free and fair election,” Rizvi claimed.

He also demanded that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia be sent abroad for better treatment.

“Her physical condition is not good. It is not improving but deteriorating. Her only option is a treatment abroad,” the BNP leader said.
