Compromise, we will extend support: Moudud

Update : 20 Jul 2013, 11:35 AM

After clamoring in seminars, meetings and rallies for the introduction of non-partisan polls-time government, the main opposition BNP on Saturday urged the government to come forward for negotiation to resolve the crisis centering the poll-time interim administration.

“There are two doors open for the government – compromise and confrontation. We think compromise is the only way to resolve the crisis,” BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed told journalists at a press briefing at the parliament’s media center.

The BNP leader also feared that the country’s democracy would be at stake if the government wants to ignore the opposition’s demand and hold the next general elections under its own arrangement.

Moudud said the government would face dire consequences if it shunned the path of compromise and chose the path of confrontation.

“Our leader (Khaleda Zia) has called for compromise to resolve the political deadlock. But, we did not get any positive response from the government, rather the Prime Minister has given negative reaction.

“We are clearing it again that neither BNP nor the 18-party alliance will take part in any election under this government,” Moudud continued.

“If the government does not come to the path of compromise, the opposition parties will compel the government to accept their demand through tough movement,” he stated.

The former law minister hoped that the government would devise a system to hold the next national election under a non-partisan interim government before dissolving the present parliament.

“We will give our full support. It will be good for the country and its people,” he commented.

Opposition lawmakers Jamiruddin Sircar, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, Abul Khayer Bhuyan, Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papiya, Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, Shammi Akhter, Rehena Akter Ranu and Rasheda Begum Hira were present at the press briefing.
